To translate a Chinese EPUB into English, check that the file contains the chapters you expect, choose a tool that accepts EPUB, and translate a range small enough to review. Compare the contents list with the chapter order before spending time on a long book.

Check the EPUB's structure first

An EPUB is a package of publication resources, not just one long text file. The W3C specification defines the spine as the default reading order and the navigation document as the contents aid. A filename or displayed chapter number does not prove the sequence by itself. Open the file in a reader, compare the contents list with chapters from the beginning, middle, and end, and make sure the body text can be selected.

Watch for repeated headings, missing sections, blank chapters, and contents links that open a different section than expected. These are source-file problems; a translation tool cannot restore text that the EPUB does not contain. The EPUB 3.3 specification explains the package and reading-order model.

The title page and metadata are also useful clues. Record the title, author, publisher, and edition shown in the file. A web serial and a later ebook may be different publication versions, so do not use a chapter count from one edition as the only check on another. If the file itself is incomplete, return to the authorized publisher or store for a usable copy.

Diagnose a chapter-order mismatch

Suppose a fictional EPUB contents list shows “Chapter 18,” a short interlude, then “Chapter 19,” while a reader displays three consecutive chapter numbers. Do not assume one entry is missing just because the labels differ. Compare the chapter titles, the volume heading, and where the interlude sits in the book. The number printed by a source site, the label stored in an EPUB, and the order shown by an app can describe different things.

Use a repeatable check: open the first chapter you plan to translate, note its title and opening scene, then do the same for the next two. Compare those titles with the EPUB contents list and, if available, the volume heading. Check one chapter near the end of the selected range as well. If the same story section appears twice or a section is absent, stop and inspect the source file before translating more. Avoid using a chapter count from a different edition as a substitute for this check.

If the contents list looks correct but a chapter opens at an unexpected place, compare the title inside the opened document with the navigation label. Also check whether the file has a separate volume heading or a front-matter section before the first numbered chapter. Record the mismatch before uploading; it helps distinguish a source-file issue from a later reader-order issue.

Confirm that the input type fits

Input and export formats are separate features. As of October 8, 2026, TeaNovel accepts EPUB uploads on Pro, does not import TXT, and does not support encrypted or DRM-protected EPUBs or image-only scans. Its Upload EPUB guide lists the current limits and supported files, and says uploaded books stay private to the account. For another tool, check its own documentation for accepted formats and file limits before preparing the book.

Use a file you own or are otherwise authorized to process. A file being easy to read or export does not change the rights attached to the source.

Upload and choose chapters

TeaNovel separates importing an EPUB from translating its chapters. On the dashboard, choose Upload EPUB, select a text EPUB within the displayed limit, and wait for the upload and import to finish. The upload indicator measures file transfer; reaching 100 percent does not mean the chapters are ready yet. After import, the book appears in your library.

Open the book and choose one of the available ranges: Next 50 untranslated chapters, a custom range, or all untranslated chapters. The next-50 option is the default. If you are testing the structure or translation, choose a small continuous range first so you can compare adjacent chapters with the EPUB contents list. Selecting all chapters is an explicit larger job, not a required step after upload.

Choose Review estimate before starting. Check the chapter count, credit cost, and available balance. Importing and parsing the EPUB do not spend translation credits; the displayed estimate applies to the translation range you confirm. If the total is more than you want to spend, reduce the range and review the updated estimate. You can keep the imported book in your library while translating fewer chapters.

After a short range finishes, check that headings and order match the source file. If the book is structured as separate volumes or includes front matter and extras, confirm where those sections appear before translating the rest. This simple check can catch a misplaced appendix or an unexpected numbering shift before it spreads across a much larger selection.

Choose a range that fits your reading goal

A custom range is useful when you want to skip front matter, translate one volume at a time, or continue from a known stopping point. Write down the chapter labels you want before opening the selector, then check that the selected count and first and last titles match. If you want to catch up from the beginning, the next-50 option gives you a bounded first selection; if you intend to translate every remaining chapter, review the all-untranslated count before confirming.

Chapter lengths vary, so equal-sized chapter ranges can have different translation costs.

Read the upload state before retrying

Uploading the file and importing its chapters are separate states. If the browser closes before upload confirmation, the documented retry flow asks you to select the local file again and send it again. Once the upload is confirmed, processing can continue in the background; check the dashboard before starting a second upload.

If processing fails, use its retry action and confirm the chapter list appears before choosing a translation range. That differs from a translation failure after import. TeaNovel's import troubleshooting guide explains upload limits, retry steps, and unsupported file messages.

Check a sample as a reader

A sample is a fit check, not a quality certification. Choose a short section you are authorized to process that includes ordinary narration, a conversation with more than one speaker, and a recurring name or term. Check four reader-facing details:

  • Meaning: Can you follow what happened and who did it?
  • Dialogue: Are speaker changes clear, or do several characters blur together?
  • Names and terms: Do recurring names remain recognizable across chapters?
  • Structure: Are paragraph breaks, headings, and scene transitions still usable?

A smooth sentence can still misrepresent its source, and a term list cannot prove that an interpretation is correct. If you do not read Chinese, mark uncertain passages rather than treating the English as verified. Our guide to assessing AI Chinese novel translation explains a cautious reader-side evaluation. If a tool offers a quality score, ask what it measures; scores from different services may use different rubrics.

If the sample reads comfortably and its structure matches the book, extend the range in steps. If the English is unclear or the source order looks wrong, pause and identify which issue you are seeing before spending more credits. A good workflow makes it possible to stop after a sample without losing the imported book.

Export only after checking the result

TeaNovel's Pro plan includes export of translated chapters as TXT or EPUB. An export contains chapters already translated; untranslated chapters are skipped. Review a few chapter headings and the table of contents in your reading app after downloading. The export guide explains the available formats and what they include.

If your source file is TXT, DRM-protected, or image-only, this EPUB upload workflow will not fit. Use a permitted text EPUB or another tool whose documented input and terms fit your source. If the EPUB and workflow suit your needs, the live pricing page shows current plan details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I translate an entire EPUB in one run?

Only if you have checked its structure and are ready to review the displayed chapter count and credit estimate. A smaller range makes it easier to catch a chapter-order issue early.

Does an EPUB's chapter number always match its reading order?

No. EPUB order is defined by its spine, while displayed labels and filenames are separate details. Compare the contents list with the chapters in a reader.

Is a readable AI translation guaranteed to be accurate?

No. Readability is not proof of correctness. Check continuity, names, dialogue, and structure, and treat uncertain passages as uncertain if you cannot verify the Chinese.
